You're Awesome.
Yes, you! Really!
Now that I have your attention, I must say that I am telling the truth; I've posed random questions to the internet at large here before, and you have inevitably come up with fantastic suggestions and advice, in such cases as The Big Bang Question, or even more recently, what in the hell to do with a rashy baby belly dear god make it stop, the poor baby, he is ever so itchy.
And so, I have two (2) more questions to throw at you. If your past responses are any indication, I'll no doubt be well-equipped with useful information in no time:
Question 1
Next month, J and I are headed off to Las Vegas for a few days. (Let's put aside my utterly crippling fear of flying for a moment, because there's no way anyone can come up with a solution for that.) Anyway, I'm very excited, as I've never been before. Although J has been, he is going to be spending much of his time there doing work-related stuff (i.e., the basis for the trip), so I'm going to be on my own during the day.
Barring the possibility that any of you will perchance be there at the same time (Dear Universe: Pretty please? Smooches, Metalia), what's a girl to do? I know that gambling is a given, but we'll definitely do that at night, so I don't want to do too much of that during the day. Particularly by myself. I have visions of a grizzled old trucker named Smokey taking me under his proverbial wing (and by "wing," I mean "sweat-stained flannel shirt reeking of cigarettes and loneliness") and getting me addicted to craps. I'm not sure what a good idea that would be. It would be pretty unfortunate if J returned to the suite only to find that said suite had been stripped and sold for parts.
Lap dances and legalized prostitution are a few of the options I know I have, but I am considering making a run for public office soon, so I'll put that on hold. (For now.)
Consequently, if you guys have any suggestions for fun stuff in Vegas that one can do on their own, I'd absolutely love to hear it. (Oh! Obviously, I'm planning on putting in much "lounging by the pool" time, so book suggestions are most welcome, too. )
Question 2
I'm getting a little tired of Blogger lately.
When we first got together, everything was just dandy. Blogger treated me like a princess, and accepted my blog posts willingly. We often worked together well into the night, happy and exhilarated that everything was going so well.
Lately, though, Blogger's been something of a lazy ass douche. It won't post things properly, it takes away my "double spaces" before starting a new sentence. It inexplicably changes fonts mid-post, and won't let me change it back. It makes the fonts super-wee for no apparent reason. Then Blogger drinks all my wine, and won't get the hell off my couch. I ask Blogger what I did wrong, and what I could be doing differently, but each time, it just shrugs its proverbial blog shoulders (bloulders?) and goes off in the corner and strums its guitar while I dream longingly of something different...something better.
So.
All this to say, if I were to leave Blogger, um.... how, exactly, would I go about doing that? If I wanted to get my own domain name, and someone to make me a pretty site (or even just a template, I don't care), in your experience, how much would that run me? Can I do it myself? Could the content from this blog transfer over, or is it a fresh start? Has anyone else tried Snapple's new "Out of the Blue-berry"Iced Tea, and if so, do you believe, as I do, that it may be laced with crack, such is its goodness? Also, what is it with me and obsessions with new drinks lately? Is it more difficult to handle your own site than it is to deal with Blogger? Any answers you can provide to any or all of these items (even the drink questions that I sneaked in there; they're equally important, if not more so) is, as always, much appreciated.
*****************************
Oh, also? My demon flu has dissipated somewhat; thanks for all your well-wishes. I'm still VERY stuffed up, and everything sounds garbled to me. Consequently, when I was playing with Toopweets earlier this evening, J and I had the following incredibly intelligent conversation:
Toops: [Insert baby giggles here.]
J: [Something I can't quite make out.]
M: Did you just ask if we have any more Caesar salad dressing?
J: I said, is there any sweeter sound than him laughing.
M: I see. Well in that case, no. No there is not. But there is Caesar dressing on the second shelf in the fridge. You know, in case you do want some.
J: Um, thanks.
Annnnnd......scene.
***************************
Thanks in advance for your advice! :)

Jamz Cheerleading & Dance National Championship. In Las Vegas. In March. 'Nuff said.
I was looking to go with a few friends - not sure what the story is - but if we're there - you can totally hang with us. Like, totally.
~Dan
Ummm? It may be too cold for you to lounge by the pool, just depends. I;m actually from Las Vegas.
So there will be a LOT of shopping and if you're able, I'd go through the Desert shopping crap they have in teh bottom of the Aladin-- lots of great, too expensive stores... also shopping in Caeser's Palace's Forum and then again in teh Bellagio. Fountian show is at the Bellagio and CP, and there is the whole Pirate show and then you have the volcano at the Mirage...
I think walking from one end of the strip to the other (I really did) took all day.
Bring money and go Christmas/Birthday/Hannukah/OMG I forgot who you are but you just gave me a gift so I have toi give you this emergency gift-gift shopping.
unlike playing a doctor on t.v., i've never been to vegas, though i'm a mean gambler. i blog on typepad therefore, i have no advise on blogger but, if you ever want advise on makeup or children's programming, i'm your gal!
This is for question 2. I've been with TypePad since Oct. '03 AND I LOVE IT. It's not as intimidating as Moveable Type, and you can do a LOT to customize your layout. I helped Julianna switch over her archives from Blogger, and made her design, and I think she's pretty happy with it!
Also, I got a domain name through Yahoo's small business domain name jobby for $9/year. I was able to hook it up to my blog and go live with no trouble at all. So, that's what I reccomend - and I'd love to help you out, too, if you're interested! :D
Ah, the Vegas Question - I love answering this! My grandpa moved there when I was about 12 - since high school, I go about every year now. To start, I agree with Julianna, it will probably be too cold to lounge by the pool this time of year. However, the weather will be gorgeous - unlike the dead heat of July/August. Pick your poison, I guess.
Shopping - I'm not much of a shopper, but I definitely recommend the Venetian Grand Canal shops, the Caesar's Forum, and the Alladin's Desert Passage.
Buffet - I recommend the Monte Carlo, Mirage and the Wynn buffets. Harrah's has a pretty damned good seafood buffet, too.
Gambling, Tables (I don't do slots, only craps and blackjack) - high end (Bellagio is my favorite the dealers are super cool, but the tables are MUY expensive), medium end (Mirage is damned good and so is the Monte Carlo), low end (The Sahara far and away is my favorite low end casino - it had a redesign in the late 90s and still looks pretty damned good. You can get some pretty good $2 craps tables there.
Downtown - The Fremont Experience isn't much of an experience, in my opinion. However, downtown is worth seeing for the history - I definitely recommend swinging by the Horseshoe and the Golden Nugget.
Art Museums - the Wynn has one, but I thought it was a little over-priced and over-rated. The Bellagio has a pretty good one, although it is a little pricey, too.
Outside Shows - Personally, I just love all the "outside shows" aka the features displayed outside the casinos- the fountains at the Bellagio, the volcano at the Mirage, the silly pirate ship at Treasure Island, and even the weird display at the Wynn. My favorite is still the fountains.
Inside Shows - Any and all of the Cirque du Soleil are SO worth it. Pricey, but they are really a sight to behold in person. I've only seen O and Mystere - I would pay to see those very same shows again. The Lance Burton show at the Monte Carlo is consistently ranked a "best value" and I would agree. The last time I saw it, the tickets were around $50, which is a steal. I've also seen Danny Gans, but I remember getting antsy towards the end. The Stardust has a "traditional" Vegas show and it was pretty good. The Imperial Palace has a "legends" impersonators show that I cannot, in good conscience, recommend.
Romantic dinner - consistently, the Stratosphere is voted "most romantic" and with good reason. The food is over-priced, but still pretty good. However, the view is AWESOME and that is what you are paying for. The restaurant does a complete rotation every 45 minutes with views of all of Las Vegas. To see the Strip from there while drinking a glass of wine and enjoying a nice meal is just superb.
Personally, my favorite casino on the strip is the Bellagio - I love the fountains, I just adore their lobby and I try to make it a point to at least visit the conservatory every time I get out there - they change it seasonally and the things they can do with foliage and flowers is just incredible. My 2nd favorite is still the Mirage, I love the tropical theme and they have a neat lounge area to sit in that is smack dab in the middle of the rainforest display thingie.
Will you have a car? The Red Rock Casino is the newest and greatest, but it is not on the strip. However, it is becoming popular with the locals and is getting high marks. I was in LV last July, but didn't get out there to see it. Also, if you have a car, just seeing Red Rock Canyon is pretty cool. And Hoover Dam is definitely worth a car trip. Both are very easy to get to from Vegas (literally, you just head west on Sahara to get to Red Rock).
Are you sorry you asked? I just realized I hogged up all your comment space. Yikes.
Oh and don't forget Madame Tussaud's at the Venetian. Oh and Liberace's museum on Tropicana, just east of the Strip. Oh and don't forget.... I'll just shut up now.....
My wife is also terrified of flying, so anytime we travel I have to give her the "B.A. Baracas" treatment: horse tranquilizers and/or a swift blow to the back of the head with a blunt object.
Although, I suppose that's more of a suggestion for "J" than for you. Sorry.
New Blogger is working my last nerve lately, too. Darren has urged me several times to get my own domain, but only now is it starting to sound like a really tempting idea.
This doesn't help you out at all, but at least you know you're not alone.
Oh! Except I CAN help you with one part of your complaints and say that it's taking out your double-space after each period because HTML doesn't recognize multiple consecutive spaces. (Someone with more of a techie background than me may have a better explanation than that. All I know is, it doesn't work.) I wouldn't worry about that, though. The norm for typed things these days is one space anyway. Two spaces were necessary only back in the days of typewriters and fixed-width fonts. So just do your one space and don't worry about it. :-)
I've only been to Vegas twice, but I really enjoyed the Bellagio. Great stores and they have an art museumy thing there and Chihouly glass in the lobby. PUrty. I also liked NY NY for the gambling part. Casual attitude even though someone stole my camera. BASTARDS!
:)
Opinions!
I have opinions.
And I freely give them.
Even when not asked.
LV: If you enjoy design and architecture (like me!), you'll love just wandering around on the strip. I think the Paris casino is my favorite. Be sure to get crepes at La Creperie.
YUM.
Blogger sucks. Little known secret: Movable Type kind of sucks, too. So I'm learning.
But! Never fear. I'm considering switching to WordPress. In fact, I've already switched an old blog just to test it out, and guess what?
IT WAS SOOOOO EASY. Like, it switched my old MT *AND* BLOGGER posts AND comments. Meaning: I didn't have to do each comment manually. Meaning: MT, get a life. YOU didn't do that for me.
So. I'd go with WordPress. It's generally the best in most ways.
Wow, I agree with cagey!! You absolutely must go see a show! And the shopping, oh, the shopping. I love Aladdin's desert passageway (get a henna tattoo and some Nestle's cookies), Paris' little cafes and shops, the M&M Factory, hit the Hard Rock for some shopping and food... what a fun time! I personally just like to walk the strip when the weather's nice, but there's also the rail to take now, too, in bad weather.
I am feeling similarly about Blogger... looking at Typepad and Wordpress at the moment.
OK, I have to comment-hijack and second and throw something back at Chirky. Are you serious about WordPress moving your comments for you?? Losing all my comments is one of the biggest reasons I've been reluctant to switch from Blogger (well, that and all the work and the fact that some jerk already bought the domain I want). Does WordPress really save your comments?? Is that just if you're using Haloscan or something, or will it pull them from Blogger as well?
(I now return you to Metalia. Thank you.) ;-)
Joining in on the comments about comments - TypePad will import all comments from Blogger, too. Not sure about HaloScan, but I'm thinking it will. And VERY user-friendly. (No, they don't pay me - why do you ask?)
I've heard that WP will let you move everything over very easily, unlike Typepad. But switching to dot com is SO easy.
Everyone's made a lot of great suggestions about Vegas: I definitely think checking out the shops is a must. Rio has the best buffet, in my book. It's great food, a nice place and excellent value. I think Bellagio's, while nice, is kind of overpriced. Be sure to stop in all the hotels, at least on the south end of the Strip. They're all so awesomely over-the-top.
As for restaurants, I highly recommend Firefly, a tapas place a few blocks behind the Wynn. Get their mojitos! I went there with my friends last time I was there, and we had the best meal. In the Bellagio, there's a place called Olives that is delicious, too.
And dude, eat at In n' Out at least once.
I have only been to Vegas once, but I will tell you what we did.
First day, pedicure at a hotel spa- I can look up which one if you want. My pedicurist was Merisol, and she was super cool. Why do I remember the name of my pedicure person but not the hotel? Because I am cool. Then we went to a cheesy bachelorette show. Oh yes, we did.
Second day, hang out at the pool and then eat dinner and dance at Tao.
For books, I am reading The Hummingbird's Daughter right now, and I really like it.
Maybe go to nearby canyons for sightseeing? Apparently there is good outlet shopping in Vegas (not near the Strip). Also SPAS! The Luxor is great, and I've also been to the Paris spa also, Wet at Treasure Island. You get to lounge as long as you want, they have drinks and snacks there, etc. Mandalay Bay also has some new shops and Bellagio shops are great for window shopping. Caesar's has fun shops and so does the Venetian. You can also go to the shark/aquarium at Mandalay during the day. HAVE FUN!
I feel like I'm always the last one to comment on your posts. I mean, do you even care that I've never been to Vegas and highly recommend TypePad at this point?
Your vision of a trucker man teaching you craps is actually very similar to what happened to me- my husb and I went to one of those cheapy casinos (across the street from the mirage, $2 tables) and while he went off to play blackjack, I befriended a handicapped middle-age man in a wheelchair (he may have not had any legs- or I might be remembering incorrectly in order to give it a more dramatic effect) who helped me learn craps. He would tell me how much to bet, and what to bet on. I even made some money that night. So you never know, it might be a fun thing to do during the day.
If you're reallllly bored- we got suckered in to one of those time-share presentations. An older lady who claimed to know all these famous actors spent 3 hours trying to get us to buy a time-share. It was torturous (we didn't realize how torturous it would be) but we ended up with free tickets to some inexpensive shows and meals, and a free hotel stay to use within the year at some different choices of places (which we never ended up using). But if you're bored, you can do that and then you and J can go to the fun shows at night.
I have no opinions about Vegas, as I've never been there. So helpful, I know.
As for the bloggy stuff, I use TypePad, plus I bought my own domain via Network Solutions. It was very easy to get TypePad to do whatever it does to direct lawyerish.com to lawyerish.typepad.com -- some kind of techie mumbo jumbo.
I find TypePad extremely easy to use, and I am a complete idiot when it comes to computer stuff. My site is just one of the TypePad templates and is snooze-inducingly boring, but I haven't done a thing to try to customize it. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to do so -- here, the problem is my laziness. If someone wanted to do it for me and make my site pretty, I'd be all over it.
My only suggestion regarding Vegas is, for the love of God, don't try to walk the Strip. Because even though it's all tall buildings and hotels, you're still in the desert and, in the desert, objects recede. You can have your eye on a landmark in the distance, walk for an hour, and it will still be the exact same distance away. My idiot friends and I tried to walk from the Stratosphere to the MGM in August (did I mention we're all idiots?) and came perilously close to death.
For hotels, while I love the Bellagio, the Venetian really takes the cake - you can take a gondola ride on the canals! And the restaurants are exquisite, the rooms romantic.
For great food (if you like Southwestern) I'd recommend "Gardunos" at The Palm Hotel and Casino ~ it's a restaurant that started as a chili-packing company in New Mexico. Casual atmosphere, but great food and fish-bowl margaritas. The Palm also has a popular night club.
For INCREDIBLE OUTLET SHOPPING, provided you have a rental car on one of those days, just outside Vegas, on a quick 40min drive through the desert (there's also a shuttle to it from New York, New York and the MGM Grand) is the Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas in Primm, NV. [Just head South on RT 15] They have over a 100 stores, including a BCBG Max Azria outlet, and Neiman Marcus Last Call. They were having additional clearance sales last I was there and I think I bought a year's wardrobe!
I also agree with -r- that some pampering at the spa, maybe a mani/pedi or massage would be fun.
Okay, now you just need to twist the arm of any girlfriend you can; it's so much more fun with someone to share it with, since J will be busy with work.
I switched to Movable Type after being with Blogger for about a year and I am happy with the move. My host is Living Dot and it runs me about $10/month. Their support desk is great and even a bumling fool like myself has somehow managed to figure it out (kinda).
I don't know much about Las Vegas but I do know about running a site.
What you'd have to do is buy a domain name (I used godaddy.com) which is a relatively cheap and easy thing to do.
Then you need to buy some hosting (I use surpasshosting.com and it's about $60 a year).
I would recommend using Wordpress. There are thousands and thousands of templates out there already made that are easily edited (some actually have really easy menus to change the header and color schemes). Also, using wordpress in itself is really quite simple.
I would be happy to help you install it, which is just about the only difficult thing about Wordpress.
