Do's and Don'ts

Well, I’m back from my whirlwind San Francisco trip, which was great. Us

I’m sad we were there for such a short period of time, and I want to go back immediately. For those of you who’ve never been, I decided to compile this helpful list of Do’s and Don’ts, should you ever visit: (Watch out, Fodor’s!)

DO embrace your inner tourist.

TURISTAS!

DON’T watch Zodiac on your laptop during your flight there. Despite the fact that it’s a well-regarded film, Jake Gyllenhaal is in it and it’s twelve hours long so you never have time to watch it at home, tell me this--In what way is it a good idea to watch a movie about: (a) a serial killer…(b) who prowled the San Francisco area…(c) AND HAS NEVER BEEN FOUND? Stupid, stupid, stupid. Watch Michael Clayton instead. Also very good, and the scariest person in it is Tilda Swinton.

DO perform your Sean Connery “Welcome to The Rock!” impression for your husband each and every time Alcatraz comes into view, no matter how many people are around. No, really! Your impression is fabulous! He’ll love it! See? Just look at his face!

J on the boat tour

DON’T jaywalk. Here's the thing: In NY, we don’t even call crossing the street against the light “jaywalking.” Here, it’s just “walking”. Essentially, we do a quick check to ensure that there are no buses approaching and that homicidal taxi drivers are at least a block away, and we just cross the street. I swear I can’t remember the last time I looked at the little red and white blinking helper dudes lights. (In fact, are they still red and white? Are they still even dudes? I DO NOT KNOW!) Anyway, I had started to make my way across a street in San Francisco when no cars were coming, and noted that everyone I’d been standing next to was...still standing on the curb, staring at me, aghast. A few seconds later, the light changed, and they all proceeded to cross the street. While giving me the eye. Um, oops?

DO eat your weight in cupcakes here.

DON’T walk into even the most innocuous-looking store in Haight-Ashbury. Because it will reek strongly of weed, and you will become exceedingly concerned that your unborn child will be born with a tail, or possibly a third eye. I should’ve been forewarned when I saw these people out front.

Hippies

And the most important one of all…

DO make sure to hang out with Moose and Holly. Self-explanatory, I think.

Me, Holly and Moose

* * * * *

Because I am a very fortunate girl, J and I managed to make it back home prior to the snowstorm from hell, I got a beautiful new bag...

New bag!!

...and I got to spend yesterday afternoon with the darling Ali, who was visiting from Canada. We had so much fun together, and I was genuinely sad when she had to leave. COME BACK SOON, ALI!

So…who’s coming to NY next? Between my time in San Francisco with Moose and Holly and my afternoon with Ali, I’m going through hanging-out-with-awesome-blogger-withdrawal.

On an unrelated note, can someone PLEASE tell me why the only dress colors at the Oscars yesterday were black or red? I was really disappointed. Then again, I'm apparently the only person IN THE GALAXY that liked Gwyneth's Zac Posen coral number last year... ...so maybe I'm alone on this one, too.

Dude, I loved her dress last year.

I thought I was the only one, too!

Sniff, sniff...Sorry, I'm having a bit of a moment. I may break into "No one is alone" from 'Into the Woods' any moment now.

P.S.
I was vomited on while strolling Haight-Ashbury by a biker. I avoid it now.

Where is that bag from? Because I so recall lusting for it. Totally cute.

Thanks, slynnro! It's from Cole Haan.

I love "The Rock" the way Simon loves Garfunkel. Or something. In any case, Chris will have to suffer me endlessly quoting it in July. Come to think of it, he suffers me quoting it too much already.

(And look at you three, all cute and bundled in your colorful coats. I'm still admittedly bummed you won't be there in July. Those wee little newborns, always messing with my social agendas.)

;)

I loooooooooove that bag. Could you please hide one for me behind all the others in the store, and I'll come and get it later? (THOSE SHOES WERE GONE, BY THE WAY!!!)

Also, what about Keri Russell? I thought she looked lovely, and she was in sort of a....puce. Ew. Maybe I'll go with "seashell."

Finally, I love how my coat is, like, TAKING OVER THE PICTURE. I'm surprised I didn't take you out with my enormous collar.

I do love me some Cole Haan. And now I must decide - new cell phone or CH baag? New cell phone or CH baag? Oh, you have such good taste.

If Holly's collar is taking over that picture, my oddly flipping bangs are close behind.

So glad you enjoyed SF!

Ooh... should I watch Zodiac at all? I mean, what about if I'm not going to be in SF anytime soon? Will it still scare the bejeezus out of me then? Yeah, probably. Off the Netflix list it goes. Frankly I'm not sure what I was thinking when I added it anyway. (Yes I do. I was thinking Jake Gyllenhall. Sigh.)

Loooove that bag. The leather looks super soft and like it would smell nice! Now, did you get the pink or the tan? I can't quite tell. I just discovered your blog and it's lovely!

My friend would point at the walk/don't walk guy and say "look it's a guy with no hands and no feet!" (hehe, used to be funny. maybe you had to be there.)

Love the bag and I'm glad you had a good time.

Hey, have you read any of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil yet? I was just curious about your reaction because I live in Savannah.

Rebecca, the bag is sort of a pale ballet pink with a touch of a gray undertone, if that makes any sense.

Anna, I'm actually in the middle of the book now and am *loving* it!

Also do not watch Zodiac while you are alone in your dark house, even though it is far, far away from San Francisco, and the Zodiac killer probably hates midwestern winters.

I'm just saying.

Oh, and apparently the dress code was black and red... unless you're pregnant. See Jessica Alba, Cate Blanchett. :-)

Welcome back. Glad you had a good time.

I'm sure your Sean Connery impression is awesome. Too bad J didn't think so. Men, they can be so unappreciative.

I think these "stars" play it safe when it comes to their dresses. Daniel Day Lewis' wife had a crazy dress on. Thank GD for her. Love your blog btw.
