I was IM’ing with the lovely Susan Wagner earlier today, discussing a multitude of beauty products. As we fully acknowledged our mutual product addictions, she wondered aloud (well, on IM, anyway) what rehab for such addiction would be like, and quickly concluded that it would involve you giving up all of your good stuff, whereupon you would be handed a Chapstick and some Dove soap. THAT’S IT.
*shudder*
As we speculated about the horrors of product addiction rehab, I began to think about the circumstances that would get you there. And that’s when I remembered one of my secret favorite train-wreck shows, Intervention. My god, can you imagine an episode about lip gloss addiction? I can, and it would be AWESOME. So much better and less depressing than the ones about compulsive shopping...or, you know, crystal meth. Here’s how my segment would go:
"I started out kinda young, I guess...dabbling in Chapstick when I was 8, moving on to Wet n' Wild by 10...by 14, I was ponying up the big bucks for Revlon Colorstay. Rich Raisin was my preference...an older cousin introduced me to it. If only I’d known then the choice I was making...It’s been years, man. And I can’t stop. Sure, I’ll slum it at Target and Rite-Aid, but when I need a real fix, what they have to offer just won’t cut it anymore.”
[Cut to me entering Neiman Marcus. Turning to camera.]
“Yep, here I am. Again.” *weeps*
[Cut to the Nars counter. The makeup assistant’s face is blurred out as she counts out my cash and hands me a tube of gloss.]
The intervention would take place in Sephora, after I’d received a (fake) 50% off coupon for the store; all my friends and loved ones would be waiting for me there, prepared to address my little problem and forcibly take away my makeup bag. I'd run crying to the bathroom, presumably to reflect upon the error of my ways and contemplate lip gloss addiction rehab, but the cameras would catch me frantically applying the teeny lipgloss I had attached to my keychain...JUST IN CASE.
Annnnnd.....scene.Now, admittedly, I don’t buy a new gloss every week. (And I am the total opposite of a gloss snob; I’ll buy anything that looks good, regardless of brand.) But I have amassed quite a collection. See this? This does not represent all of my glosses; it came from ONE BAG:
And so I thought to myself, wouldn’t it be fun (for me, anyway) to do a little lip gloss timeline? Taking you from my youthful mistakes to my present-day favorites? (Answer: Yes. Yes, IT WILL BE FUN, DAMMIT.)
Age 8-14: Cherry Chapstick –I was not allowed to wear any makeup WHATSOEVER until I was 14. The only concession my mom made to this hard-and-fast rule was Chapstick…which, by the way, is still in my beauty arsenal. I resented this rule at the time, but considering that 11-year-olds are getting highlights, and 10-year-olds are getting bikini waxes, in retrospect, perhaps it was good that I got time to be a kid.
Age 14-15: Revlon Colorstay Raisin Lipstick –The next few years were not kind to me. I kicked things off with this long-wearing lipcolor, which hit the lipstick trifecta of being: (a) matte; (b) drying and flaky; (c) A REVOLTING SHADE OF DARK ORANGE. Did I mention that I wore scented body glitter simultaneously with this lipstick? Because I did.
Age 16: "Adult" Film Star Lipstick – I moved on, but didn’t wise up, as my next makeup decision was to rock the ever-classy “pale, pale lipstick, dark, dark lipliner” look favored by women with names like "Candy Rainns" and "Destiny Heavenn". Needless to say, I thought I looked foxy as hell. The sad thing is, I'd tried this look a few years before...
...and then did it AGAIN. Because clearly, I don't learn from my mistakes.
Age 16-18: Clinique Tenderheart Gloss – Heather B. and I were just talking about our respective Clinique Stages, and how every girl goes through one. Mine involved Tenderheart. My mom had received it in one of those “gift with purchase” bags from Clinique, and she gave it to me. It was THE FIRST LIP GLOSS I EVER OWNED. The shine! The sheer color! The texture! I was immediately obsessed, and pretty much abandoned lipstick from that point on. Thank God. This stage also involved their Almost Lipstick in Black Honey. I also topped everything with either MAC Lipglass in Clear, or Urban Decay XXX Shine Lip Gloss in Love Junkie.
The crazy shine imparted by both of these glosses, however, resulted in the unfortunate side effect of them being STICKY BEYOND ALL REASON, and so it was that I perennially walked around with locks of my hair glued to my lips…and then like, having to physically PRY it off, only to be left with clumpy strands of gloss-coated hair that nothing but a good washing would get rid of. Neat!
College years/Early 20’s: Drugstore Diva –Living on my own for the first time, I didn’t have tons of cash to blow on makeup. I needed to save it for necessities like alcohol and cheese puffs. And so, I did most of my makeup shopping at the Duane Reade drugstore around the corner from my apartment. Neutrogena MoistureShine Gloss in Dreamy figured prominently in my routine, as did Almay Ideal Lip Gloss in what I believe was a wine color. I also still wore the supersticky Urban Decay gloss. Because I was an idiot.
Alba TerraGloss in Garnet- Don't be put off by the hot pink gloss that appears in the link! It's actually much tamer than that, more of a neutral/reddish color. I saw this separately on Whiskeymarie and Kerflop, and after asking them both about the beautiful lipgloss they were each wearing (and getting the same answer), I ran out to get it. It's gorgeous, sheer, and tastes vaguely like vanilla frosting. Mmm.
Kiehl's Lip Gloss in Goldenberry- A recommendation from Whoorl, I wear this or the Alba gloss every day. It's a perfect sheer pinky peachy, whatever-y color. This one tastes like mango. Mmm. (Are you sensing a theme here?)
Chanel Glossimer in Sirop - Once again, I urge you not to be put off by the frightening coral shade this gloss appears to be in pictures (um, and in person). Yes, I know it looks like it would go perfectly with a floral pantsuit, orthopedic sandals, and an Early Bird dinner, but I'm telling you, this is one of the most gorgeous, subtle shades I've ever come across. And by "come across" I of course mean "stopped a woman in the street for, in order to ask her what lip gloss she was wearing." (True story.)
Nars Lip Gloss in Foul Play- My search for the perfect nude lip gloss has taken me far and wide, and I can say with great certainty that THIS IS IT.
Nars Lip GLoss in Rose Birman - The good people at Sephora describe this shade as a "sheer raspberry cream." which I guess is pretty accurate. This is my go-to shade for any event that requires me to style my hair, put on heels, and generally look the part of a grown-up.
You know, I'm sure, what I'm going to ask you now, right? What are your faves?
Get to it! (Pretty please.)
(PS: Happy Mother's Day, fellow mamas!)

I love Chanel Glossimer! Love it. I might possibly even have to use the word addiction to describe my relationship with it.
Oh dear, how I loved the Revlon in Raisin. Flaky is totally right, though.
I love Aveda Lip Glosses - and also the tinted Burt's Bees
Dude. I still use Black Honey and Tenderheart. WHATEVER.
SLynnRo! I have NO problem with either one of those! In fact, when I was writing this, it occurred to me that I need to pick both of 'em up again, because they really were good! Promise! (Are we good?)
Of course. My comment sounds bitchy- it's not. I'm making fun of myself and my high school make-up tastes.
And I third the Chanel Glossimer. It's the only super glossy gloss that isn't super sticky.
My what large amounts of lip gloss you have!
(ALL the better to make out with, right?)
I don't even know what my life would have been without the Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey.
Seriously, I loved that stuff like nothing else.
OMG this post makes me SO HAPPY.
I love Bella Il Fiore's glosses, and the Fresh line -- they smell like sugar cookies, for starters, and come in lovely colors.
And Cherry Chapstick is TOTALLY a gateway gloss. Just so you all know.
I am a lip gloss whore too. My favorites include:
a NARS shade that is discontinued. SOB. It's a very red gloss, but it works perfectly for a pale girl like me.
I recently ventured into the world of Stila lip glazes and have hated every single one of them. Thank god Sephora takes crap back.
I know Benetint isn't exactly a gloss, but top it with some clear gloss, and swoon.
MAC's nymphette is pretty rocking too.
I'm going to stop now, because this list is becoming embarrassing.
Stefanie gave me some Kiehls lip gloss, and I love it, but I rarely wear lip gloss or any kind of lip product besides Chapstick. (Insert look of horror from Metalia here.)
Okay.
How is it that you are able to answer my day dream today? I was driving around, with three sleeping kids in the back, wondering when I could find some time to go gloss shopping.
I am so printing this out. Thanks!
That Intervention show makes me cry every time! Damn it.
I really needed new gloss ideas. This post is so helpful!
I can't believe this is the second Cover Girl recommendation I'm making in five minutes (I use make-up from other places, I swear), but not only to I swear by their mascara, but my favorite casual, throw-in-your-purse lip gloss is their Wet Slicks in Lemon. It's the perfect warm shade of gold that brightens and warms any lipwear. It's got just enough shimmer to be slightly elegant, yet it's sheer and natural enough for every day. It's my total go-to gloss.
For actual, real-world situations, I swear by Alba Terra Gloss. And that's as glam as I get in the lip department. It's on my list to get Daring.
I am shocked by the absence of Lip Smackers in your early years! I lived by that stuff! In fact, I would buy the same flavor that my crush's girlfriend wore, because I knew he liked it already!
Now, I love C.O. Bigelow lip glosses, especially the peppermint (lovely sheer pink color) and the cinnamon (very shiny and even more sheer). They are very pretty, natural and super yummy. I also love Burt's Bees lip balm for everyday.
Blistex Complete Moisture. Desert Essence shea butter somethingorother (all-time fav. glossy balm). Still working the Black Honey. Neutrogena Moisture Shine in First Blush. Am going to hippie store tomorrow for Terra Gloss, as I keep hearing recs for it, which is clearly proof that Jesus wants me to have it like, five minutes ago.
Unfortunately, my field of potential gloss loves is sadly thinned by my hatred of hair-in-gloss. However, the ones that aren't so sticky are much less long-wearing, so you get to reapply more often, and part of me loves that. Everyone raves about Lipglass, but I canna hack it.
God, I love makeup talk. It shames me, as a feminist, but whatever. Lip goo!

Pink lemonade by Bonnie Bell.
I'm such a trendsetter.
Most glosses drive me batty. Not the look, but the feel.
I do, however, have a few Mac Lipglasses and I lurve them.
I like Mac Lip Glass in Lust, C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Tint in Magenta Mint, plain Kiehl's balm, and this organic hemp gloss I got at the SF Green Festival...I'm such a hippie.
This might make you feel better - well, not that you were feeling badly - but I recognized at least 3/4 of the glosses/tubes in your picture. Maybe I need an intervention as well.
However, my favorite go-to is, and probably always will be, Dr. Pepper chapstick. I know! It sits next to my Nars and my Chanel and my Mac and the high-society glosses languish as I daily pick out the Dr. Pepper. I do use the others for anything that really MATTERS, but hey, daily life matters to me :)
I love when I can use my powers of persuasion for good instead of evil!
Terra Gloss rocks!
And, does it help to know that I too was a slave to the Revlon Colorstay in Raisin? Wore it for YEARS.
Soooo I still have (and use) an Urban Decay Love Junkie that I bought with you probably about 6 years ago. It is sticky, but pretty!
I own eight of the products in your photo there. :-) And I remember the raisin ColorStay and know lots of girls who swore by the Black Honey Almost Lipstick. (I never tried that one, but I'm still a little intrigued.)
You already know my current favorite, and I'm going to stop typing it, because clearly Neutrogena is not hearing all my complaining and rethinking their decision to discontinue it, and any that are still left out there are MINE, ALL MINE. ;-)
Oh how I love lip gloss! My own addiction started with Bonnie Bell, who had the audacity to discontinue the best Lip Smacker flavor of all time (Passion Fruit), bastards!.
Yesterday I counted four C.O. Bigelow™ tubes in my car (MY CAR!). Man, I love them. Weeeee!
I used to have an addiction. I was going to tell you there's hope. Except that I just emptied out my diaper bag, just for you, and I found this:
Fresh in Sugar Goddess. (Love!)
Helena Rubinstein in Brilliant Brown and Brilliant Beige. (I stocked up before I left the co. Now they're impossible to find and I'm down to the plastic tube thingy in the beige. Not good.)
Club Monaco in Glaze. (Yes, it's the one that Monica Lewinsky wore in the interview.)
No-name Sephora gloss.
Dr. Pepper Chapstick
CG Lipslicks in Daring and Demure. (Sadly Daring looks awful on me, maybe my coloring is much different than the rest of the internet, but Demure looks fine on me.)
Oh, and tonight is Gossip Girl! I think I might explode from all this girly talk!
OMG, I had forgotten about cherry Chapstick! That was my first addiction, too!
Now I'm a Burt's Bees girl, all the way. If Burt's Bees ever goes out of business, I will have to be locked up until the withdrawal is over.
oh, i, like you (of course) have a gazillion and one different glosses. and it's been an experiment in some good ones, and some god-awful ones...
right now i'm partial to my MAC plushglass in pretty plush. mostly because of the tingle. (love) hahaha.
So, I realize I am double commenting, but I got to thinking..If there happened to be a lipgloss rehab, I wonder if they would force chap lips? And if so, how long would this go on without treatment? Would there be a generic treatment like smearing vaseline on the lips? So curious.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Lancome's Star Gloss in Moonlight. Absolutely clear and SO shiny. Of course I haven't bought another $30 tube in years but it is wonderful!
Oh! I have been really into a Kiehl's gloss as well - but it's also a balm with SPF. Hue No. 58B, whatever that means. Also, if you haven't tried Pout Plump yet, you are soooo missing out, little lady.
Do your chosen glosses have SPF? 'Cause I just read recently that apparently shiny gloss can cause skin cancer on your lips. (I am completely not kidding.) Something about the way the light reflects back.
Hello and welcome to my FAVORITE TOPIC EVER!!!! Like you, I adore Nars Foul Play and Kiehl's Golden Berry. I also could not live without the following glosses:
- Fresh Lip Shine in Satine (sheer berry)
- Chanel Glossimer in Giggle (nude)
- Mac Lustreglass in Beaux (bronzy)
- Kiehl's gloss in Pink Rider
And like you, I'm certain I'll be the subject of a Gloss Intervention. It is a SICKNESS. But it's a sickness that hurts so good.
I MUST have something on my lips at all times, so I'll go with Bonnie Bell or Burt's Bees or even Avon lip smacker things (hey, they go on sale for 79c!). Just don't get the "natural lip smoothers" from Avon; they taste like ass.
I also have CG (in Demure).
Avon also has their Glazewear line in some pretty good colors (and they also go for 3.99 once in a while).
But...I am off to Sephora.com to see what other kind of trouble I can get into...
lip balm anonymous -- http://www.kevdo.com/lipbalm/chapstick.html
for real.
as for me, once in a while i'll rock a Lancome Juicy Tube but usually it's Burt's Bees.
I am soooo impressed by your gloss collection, wow!
I really just discovered glosses again this past year (weren't really into them since I was a teen); I like the taste of Juicy tubes, I know, to eat ;). The caramel is to die for. Colour actually isn't so bad either lOL!
I just got some Philosophy Kiss Me Red and really like it. It's super emollient, not sticky at all, with the barest hint of color. I also have Nars Orgasm, which is okay. I wish I'd read this before I got it and I'd have gotten Foul Play instead. Next time!
I relate with the history of lip gloss. I myself began with alternating mint and strawberry chapstick. I just found and really like e.l.f. moisture-care lip gloss
Oh, what fun!! I, too, love me some lip gloss ;) When all of my girlfriends in college were sporting their lipstick, I stuck by The Great Gloss! I love Lancome Juicy Tubes, but a) they are pretty stinking pricey and b) they really support the sticky issue.
However, I have finally found the perfect thing for me: Rosebud Salve! Six bucks for a pot (which, I must say I used to be very anti-lip gloss pot, but now that I am a purse carrying adult it doesn't pose that won't fit in the tiny "lip gloss pocket" in my jeans problem) and it lasts forever (my last one lasted almost six months)! My friend is a Sephora addict and found this perfect, nude, non-sticky shade that also doubles in dry skin healing and fly away control!! It rocks!!
OOOHHHH My very favorite tinted gloss is Aveda Lip Tint SPF 15 in Verbena. It is quite tinted - but I love it so much more then a lpstick. I also love Smith's rosebud salve for a clear gloss. My lips are never dry or flaky - and this stuff totally clears up diaper rash in a pinch too.
