My Latest Obsession

I’m not quite sure when it happened, but lately, I’ve totally lost interest in watching movies at home. I still love going to the movies (partly for the entertainment, but also because it’s one of the few places where it’s socially acceptable to top your snacks with a metric ton of melted butter), but I always get antsy when I watch movies at home because I’m sure I could be doing something better with those two hours. Which is hilarious, really, because while I tell myself I could be doing something useful with that chunk of time, like organizing pictures, or baking bread (I have done this ONCE) what I usually end up doing is…shit like this.

Somehow though, in my twisted mind, watching endless hours of TV shows doesn’t count; the time spent doing so is mysteriously different than the same time spent watching a movie. Which is my special way of telling you that I’ve become OBSESSED with Freaks and Geeks. As has J.

We’re only about four episodes in, but we discuss it during the day, ponder the characters' motivations, and reminisce about good lines together. It’s a good thing we found each other, people.

While our behavior is admittedly embarrassing, the show really IS amazing, and I’m bummed it’s going to end so quickly. Also? I’ve developed a bit of a weird crush on James Franco. Not James Franco in real life, mind you, but the dirty, stupid stoner James Franco on the show (and, um, in Pineapple Express). I KNOW.

So, since-at the rate we’re going-we’ll be done with the series by the end of the week, what show that I never watched should I become obsessed with next? Gilmore Girls? Veronica Mars? WHAT? (Yes, I used to watch much less TV, and missed a lot of apparently great shows.)

And don’t tell me to do something useful with my time, like making more bread! I’m serious, I get way too cocky when I do Fancy Extraneous Baking! See? WHO MAKES FACES LIKES THIS AND FORCES PEOPLE TO TAKE PICTURES OF HER WITH BRAIDED DOUGH? WHO, I ASK YOU, WHO?

Sigh.

In other news, my younger brother got engaged this past weekend! The wedding will be at the end of the summer, and we are so excited for him and his fiancee. I adore them together, I love weddings, and I love getting to indulge my inner Project Runway contestant. You see, rather than having members of their wedding party wear identical dresses, most Modern Orthodox Jewish brides select a color and fabric and have their girls design their own dresses. They're then sewn by a dressmaker. (Ali, back me up here!) I have no idea WHY this is, but for whatever reason, it's what a lot of brides do. While it's a lot of fun, I'm not incredibly talented in the drawing arena. And so, over the coming months, please expect a post or two soliciting your advice on detailed and well-executed dress sketches, such as this: Oy.

Leanne Marshall, I am not.

* * * * * * * * *

I have not one but TWO posts up at BeautyHacks this week. One, about Old Navy's new petite clothing line, and the other about THE BEST CONCEALER EVER, complete with before and after pictures of my (oh-so-tired) eyes.

I had never heard that about Orthodox weddings before! My friends (we're Lutheran) did it at their wedding - all the women had the exact same fabric and got to choose to have made whatever style of dress they wanted. It looks really neat - AND everyone looks good (usually).

Yah, for weddings!

Gilmore Girls! Arrested Development! My husband says if you like Freaks and Geeks, you should watch Undeclared. (I have no comment, since I've never heard of that, but Matt knows what he is doing.)

Oh, Daniel, we hardly knew ye. That show is The Very Best.

I'd put Veronica Mars on the list if I were you. And, if you really want to go crazy, think about getting started with Buffy (unless I missed an episode of your blog wherein you've already watched all the Buffys and/or hated them. But if you've never indulged, you gotta do it. It takes a while to fall in love with the bad special effects and the goofy dialogue, but it's great stuff.)

Also, if you like snappy dialogue, try Sports Night, if you happened to blink and miss its too-brief broadcast life.

We got sucked into F&G really quickly, too. I think we watched the whole season over two weekends, and I was sad when it ended. You'll see why. But it's cool that a lot of the actors are doing so well now, despite the fact that the show didn't make it.

For a little more Jason Segel, may I suggest How I Met Your Mother? It wasn't until the second season that we felt the show really hit its stride, so if you haven't seen it, and you decide to give it a try, don't give up if you're not immediately sucked in. There's some really funny stuff in the second season.

Oh, and I totally agree with you on your crush on James Franco's character. He's a little bit like Jordan Catalano (please tell me you've seen My So-Called Life?), isn't he? Gotta love those too-good-looking-for-their-own-good-bad-boy types, huh?

Metalia said...

Ooh! Thanks, guys! I am LOVING How I Met Your Mother; we only started watching this year, and I'm kicking myself for not having found it sooner. Never saw ONE EPISODE of Gilmore Girls, Undeclared or Buffy.

(Seriously. Living under a rock over here.)

Every single time I cook, I take pictures. And by cook, I don't mean bake shit. I mean, cook chicken nuggets. I have taken out the camera 3 maybe 4 times this year.

Amanda said...

I vote that you become obsessed with Gilmore Girls next. Both my husband (he does not mind admitting this fact) and I became obsessed with it earlier this year and watched the entire series rather quickly.

She Likes Purple said...

My Veronica Mars obsession is unhealthy, so I couldn't go WITHOUT pushing it obnoxiously on you. I do like Gilmore Girls, and you should watch that as well, but I'd start with VM. It's only three seasons long.

Kristabella said...

I love Gilmore Girls, so I vote for that. Plus, I think they have like 7 or 8 seasons, so that should take some time.

confiance said...

I vote for Gilmore Girls, as I am currently in the middle of watching all 7 seaons in a row - I missed the first 3 or 4 and am currently missing it. A lot.

Other than that, Firefly? Deadwood? The West Wing? Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip?

sharoneb said...

I definitely agree - you must check out Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls. They're both phenomenal. I'd also suggest Alias, which is probably at the top of my "favourite TV shows" list. The first two seasons are definitely the best (5 in all), but it was a fantastic show.

Ginger said...

Oh, I'll come out of hiding to add to the chorus of Gilmore Girls & Veronica Mars. I personally would also add Arrested Development & Scrubs(oh wait, that's my netflix list)

Jennifer, Playgroups Are No Place For Children said...

I love a dose of Jewish facts in a post, thank you.

As for shows, I think you'd really enjoy Gilmore Girls with all their witty banter. Veronica Mars, like She Likes Purple said, is also a MUST SEE. I'm still in mourning that it got cancelled.

Hillary said...

We did the same thing with Freaks and Geeks while I was pregant. Undeclared is good, but not as good. We watch a lot of TV through Netflix. We're going through the Wire right now.

gorillabuns said...

I'd be in so much trouble if I had to design my own bridesmaid dress. I'm afraid I would look even more horrible in my own concoctions than the brides.

Bethany said...

I vote Gilmore Girls, Buffy, and Veronica Mars. They're witty, and smart, and definitely addicting.

VMars is good, but have you seen How I Met Your Mother? Hilarious! But, you need to watch it from the beginning as it is an on going story. Also good: Arrested Development & Entourage.

Ali said...

as usual. we are twins. i, of course, am OBSESSED with Freaks and Geeks. and dirty druggy James Franco makes me go a big rubbery one (don't ask me what it means, it's from Fight Club. we don't question Ed NOrton)

and yes, i got your back, woman. with the whole design your own dress for Jewish weddings thing. i was all about the stick figures too. and it's a total crapshoot whether or not your dress with come out the way you envisioned. good times...i tell you.

Chubbacoo said...

Ok, can we talk about the so-called dark circles? (which makes me think of one of my pre-kids obsession: My So Called Life...priceless. Also, Felicity.) Anyway, what circles? Are you even tired? Are you sure you have two kids? A newborn? I think you borrow that baby for the pictures...I see no darkness, circles, bags...nothing. But thanks for the tip from those of us who really do need it :)

Jennifer said...

I love your drawings :)

I say go for Gilmore Girls next- ever watched? It's fantastic. I still watch the reruns on ABC family, I've seen the whole series through probably 4 or 5 times now. It never ever gets old.

geminigirl64 said...

I second the How I met your mother (I only started watching it a few months ago), Gilmore Girls is good (but your hubby may fall asleep), but thte ultimate is : LOST. You will get sucked in. Sucked in, I tell ya!

Stephanie said...

Veronica Mars is OUTSTANDING. The first season is some of the best tv ever. The second season is still pretty good. The third season, bless its heart, suffered from the "send all these high school students to the same college in their hometown" syndrome, but you'll still want to watch it just to get more time with them.

If you haven't watched all of Buffy, do that too. LOVE. Hilarious. I almost wish I had never seen it so I could see it again for the first time.

The first couple seasons of Grey's Anatomy are fun in a soapy, pretty-people-doing-stuff kind of way, but it goes off the rails in the third season.

And I recently got obsessed with Mad Men.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT!!! Do it this weekend.

Funny, I interviewed James for the second time on Tuesday night (first time at the Spidey 3 premiere). He's actually really nice and spidey in real life (but not stoner-y, ha).

And I am the SAME way. I am a TV FANATIC, and I absolutely love going to the theater, but I've had the same three Netflix movies since JULY since I just can't seem to get myself to watch movies at home. I, too, feel like it's 2 hours wasted (though the same 2 hours spent catching up on Gossip Girl is not). How the Hell does that work???

claire said...

I LOVED Freaks & Geeks. We must have watched the entire series in maybe 3 nights. My love for Bill knows no bounds.

Undeclared was ok, but not the same - give it a shot, though. And my vote goes to Veronica Mars, then Gilmore Girls. My attachment to VM may have been a little unhealthy and i was really upset when they canceled it. Also, it will give you good ideas to put on your phone's voicemail message.

Mrs. Who said...

We were obsessed with "Freaks and Geeks" as well and were sad when it ended. I watched all the "Gilmore Girls" show and then got my husband to watch them, so we are enjoying them all over again. It is a wonderful series. We also loved "Buffy" and "Angel" - tough it out, Buffy starts very slow and campy but you will totally love the characters. We also LOVE "Smallville". Seriously, if you love good characters, you should watch this. Let us know what you decide!!

amanda said...

Okay. What you're gonna wanna do is watch Undeclared, follow that up with Arrested Development, and continue on with some Scrubs or maybe even Firefly if you're into SciFi at all.

In addition, my undying love for Seth Rogen began with Freaks and Geeks, so I hear ya.

Carrisa said...

Um yes to the Veronica Mars. YES YES YES. Did you know that Isabel and I had an entire blog dedicated to that show? And then they went and canceled it and now it's just a regular boring tv blog. It's only 3 seasons long so it's enough for you to fall in love but not so much that you will spend the next 6 months watching episodes. Plus the guys on that show are hot.

Megs said...

Ditto everyone who said Buffy, Veronica and "Your Mom" (what we call it in our house). LOVE. I gave in to watching Gossip Girl only to hear Kristen Bell's voice again (and am subsequently hooked, but that's a story for another time). And you HAVE to see last season's Slapsgiving episode of Your Mom (but watch The Slap Bet first).

I do like almost every show mentioned here...I think I watch WAY too much tv. :-)

Stephanie said...

I do the exact same thing... my boyfriend cannot understand why I will readily watch 3-4 episodes of a show in a row, but it's like pulling teeth to get me to agree to a movie. I can't explain it either.

I wholeheartedly agree to both VM and Gilmore Girls. I think you should also go back and watch the previous episodes of How I Met Your Mother if you've just started with this season. An older show that I'd recommend, and is easy to get through b/c it was canceled too soon, is Sports Night.

regan said...

I vote Gilmore Girls. I got into it the summer before the final season and spent that summer watching all the previous seasons in an effort to be caught up. My husband joked for a while that he knew more about the lives of Rory and Lorelai than he knew about mine.

I tried Veronica Mars and hated it. I returned the first disc to Netflix and removed all the rest from my queue.

Some People Call Me Mom said...

Gilmore Girls is a good bet. Scrubs is always good for a laugh - but Arrested Development, Arrested Development, Arrested Development!

(I know it was already said, but really? Arrested Development)

Rhiannon said...

You must get Undeclared. And, also One Tree Hill if you don't already watch it. I got the first season of it when I was home for my surgery and now I AM ADDICTED.

Also, 14 years old apparently.

kerrianne.org said...

I LOVE watching entire seasons of t.v. shows better even than I like watching them when they traditionally air throughout the weeks and months. The instant gratification! The episode after episode! I NEED it. Um, OK. I also need a 12-step program, clearly.

I'm not even done with Alias yet (which became quite an obsession), and still have to finish season 4 of The Office.

(Congratulations! to your little brother.)

Sparkling Cipher said...

OMG, I luuuv F&G. The ones with Ken and Amy are so cute. I so wish they had gone another couple seasons, except I read somewhere that Judd Apatow intended to go in a direction I think would have been a mistake. That's all I'll say about that right now lest I ruin any of it for you.

I agree with the others that said Undeclared was good, but not as luuuvable as F&G. Jay Baruchel was good and Charlie Hunnam is a hottie. Right now I'm hooked on Numb3ers and NCIS.

est said...

This reminds me of the time you got me into "My So-Called Life". We must have watch the entire series in a week? I would dream about the characters, I felt so connected to them.

Frédérique Conradi said...

Veronica Mars reallyis the first show you should watch.
Followed by Gilmore Girls, it's such a smart show.
And Arrested Development, the best comedy show I've ever watched.
They are all really smart shows.

anna said...

Freaks and Geeks was the best! The little kid was just my absolute favorite - the anguish on his face about the jumpsuit (if you haven't gotten to that one yet, get ready!) is one of my favorite tv moments of all time.

If you haven't ever watched Alias that will keep you busy for a while. I didn't start watching until Season 4, so I had a lot to go back and catch up on. Season 3 was my absolute favorite; unfortunately Season 5 and the way the series ended pretty much blew, but what are you gonna' do?

S.Rod said...

Haha. I never comment on anything. Ever. But I saw that you missed Gilmore Girls and I was sad for you. If you like your dialogue fast, funny, and heavily-laden with (sometimes obscure) pop culture, then Gilmore Girls is for you. The West Wing is also fantastic in a witty, yet more cerebral way, which is nice because then you don't feel guilty about doing something more productive instead of watching. Finally, Sports Night is old, but seriously quality.

We have trouble finding shows that appeal to both of us. Two of our favorites (besides F&G) have been Arrested Development and Flight of the Concords. Seriously, the funniest shows I have ever, ever seen. Also BBC Office is pretty good too.

If I beg, will you send me some handmade challah bread with your smiling face plastered all over it?

Congrats to your brother's engagement! Ever since my boyfriend proposed to me with a gorgeous diamond engagement ring www.idonowidont.com I've been wedding planning 24/7!

I loved Kenley's mcqueen inspired wedding dress on Project Runway and I would love to wear it down the aisle so I can feel like a fashion bride!

My husband and I watched Freaks and Geeks back when it was on NBC, we were CRUSHED, totally crushed when it was cancelled.

One of the best shows ever.

Christine said...

OHMYGOD, Tony and I went through all the episodes of Freaks and Geeks this summer followed by our marathon watching of Arrested Development. *Sigh*

Also, I checked out your concealer post, and woman your dark circles are nothing! Geez, when I am wearing concealer I get to the level of darkness of your before picture. Damned genetics. I will certainly check out the Amazing Concealer. Who knows, maybe it will be the best $28 spent ever.

That is an awesome challah. i started making them after Ammar arrived and the best recipe ever is one called "Chernowitzer challah" http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/CHERNOWITZER-CHALLAH-235871

whch tastes sooo good!

Also, I thought about you today because I was looking around for new exercises I could see online and ran across this guy and immediately had a totally terrible and inappropriate crush. Really. On this guy. It's awful.

You may not be LeAnne, but through the whole season, I kept thinking she looked like a less-pretty, less lively version of you.

Also, Gilmore Girls! Definitely Gilmore Girls. How have you not watched that yet?? As an added bonus, it was on the air for seven full seasons, meaning it will occupy your time for far longer than the cruelly short-lived Freaks and Geeks will.

I just found your blog, which I think google reader suggested to me because I am also a lip gloss ho. (And parenting a huge lip gloss ho. Seriously, my daughter has most of the lip gloss in the free world tucked into a pink box in her bedroom.)

I loved Freaks and Geeks (which I watched earlier this year), and I have to HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you watch Veronica Mars. It is awesome.
