Cover Me

First of all, I have to thank you for the incredible response to the contest I’m running to promote the Motion Comics on behalf of my husband. He and I really, really appreciate your participation and your feedback. And if you haven’t entered yet, what are you waiting for? $50 SEPHORA GIFTCARD UP FOR GRABS.)

* * * * * * * * * *

I’m in a bit of a music rut lately, and I therefore solicited the guidance of all-knowing Twitter yesterday about people’s favorite cover songs. (I love cover songs. And making inconsequential decisions based upon information gleaned from Twitter. Whatever. I don’t care who knows it.) I subsequently fell down a crazy rabbit hole of iTunes purchases/YouTube video searches, as I listened to all the new stuff that was being suggested. I’m sharing my own favorites, and the responses I received with you here in the event that you, too, are looking for new music and/or share my unrepentant love of cover songs. Because really, it's too good not to share.

Here are ten covers that are in constant rotation on my iPod:

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" – Tori Amos (Nirvana)-- Sometimes, when I’m driving and this song pops up on shuffle, I try to sing along. I suspect that if anyone were ever to secretly record my yowling whisper-shrieks, I would become an instant YouTube sensation. I like to think my viral video would garner me a cool nickname like “Nirvana Singing Driving Banshee,” and maybe I’d get free Munchkins at Dunkin’ Donuts when the employees would recognize me, and perhaps I’d achieve a modicum of fame in portions of Europe. I mean, whatever. I haven’t put that much thought into this, so it’s no big deal. I’m breezy.

"Run" - Leona Lewis (Snow Patrol) - I loved the stripped-down original, but man, am I ever a sucker for a big ol’ backing choir.

"I Will Survive" – Cake (Gloria Gaynor) – The less said about the tragicomic tale of woe involving me repeatedly playing this after a breakup in college, the better. Except that I thought that it made it OKAY, and that I was SO not a GIANT WALKING CLICHÉ, because it was this version, instead of the original. Ugh. Shut up, Douchey College Me.

"Baby Got Back" - Jonathan Coulton (Sir Mix-a-lot) – I know the original by heart (I mean, really, who doesn’t?) but the first time I heard this, I was blown away by the clever cover. I like to think that wherever Sir Mix-A-Lot is right now, whether he’s rolling in his Mercedes, or expressing his displeasure with the beanpole dames in the magazines, he would approve.

"Hallelujah" – Jeff Buckley/Rufus Wainwright (Leonard Cohen) – Both are take-your-breath-away beautiful.

"Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright"
- Ted Lennon and Brett Dennen (Bob Dylan) – Just gorgeous. I’m one of those assholes who, for the most part, enjoys Bob Dylan’s music more when other people are playing/singing it. I am okay with that.

"O Holy Night" - Kelly Clarkson (?????) – Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP. I like her, okay?

"Only You" –Joshua Radin feat. Ingrid Michaelson - (Yaz) As much as I’d like to say I closely followed Mr. Radin’s musical career, I, uh…(sigh) heard this song in a J.C. Penney commercial a while back, and did a mad scramble to find the cover artist.

"Long Black Veil" – Dave Matthews Band (Johnny Cash) - I usually loathe most Dave Matthews covers for the singular reason that they’re inevitably live from some random concert, and there’s like, a forty-seven minute guitar solo intro in which I lose the will to live, and it’s like “We GET IT, Dave, you are JAMMING. Because everyone’s high on THE AMAZING CONCERT OF WONDER. AND ALSO A LOT OF WEED. And you and the band are just LOST IN THE MUSIC. And together with the assembled audience, you have evolved into a glorious, scintillating entity of ONENESS AND MUSICALITY.” This cover, though, is somehow different. It’s under 87 minutes (always a plus!), doesn’t meander too much, and has gorgeous backing vocals from the Lovely Ladies. Also, the way he sings it is subdued and heartbreaking in a hurts-so-good type of way.

"Proud Mary" – Ike and Tina Turner (Creedence Clearwater Revival) – Best. Cover. Ever.

And here were the responses from my Twitter friends:

Because the Night -10,000 Maniacs (Patti Smith)
Billy Jean -Jason Mraz (Michael Jackson)
Careless Whisper - Seethers (Wham!)
Don't Leave Me This Way - The Communards (Thelma Houston)
Fields of Gold -Eva Cassidy (Sting)
Float On – Ben Lee (Modest Mouse)
Free Fallin’ – John Mayer (Tom Petty)
Friend of the Devil – Counting Crows (Grateful Dead)
Heatwave - Bronski Beat (Bing Crosby )
Heartless – Kris Allen (Kanye West)
Hey Ya –Obadia Parker (Outkast)
High and Dry – Jamie Cullum (Radiohead)
Hit Me Baby, One More Time - Travis (Britney Spears)
How Deep is Your Love - The Bird and the Bee (BeeGees)
Keep Your Hands to Yourself – Sawyer Brown (Georgia Satellites)
Landslide – Smashing Pumpkins (Fleetwood Mac)
Lover, You Should’ve Come Over – Jamie Cullum (Jeff Buckley)
Mad World - Nick Cave (Tears for Fears)
Mahna Mahna - Cake (old skool Sesame Street)
No Rain – Jane’s Addiction (Blind Melon)
Question – Ben Lee (Old 97s)
Scarlet Begonias - Jimmy Buffett (Grateful Dead)
Sea of Love - The Honeydrippers (Phil Phillips)
Tangled Up in Blue – Indigo Girls (Bob Dylan)
Toxic – Yael Naim (it’s Britney, bitch)
What Are You Waiting For – Franz Ferdinand (Gwen Stefani)
Wonderwall – Ryan Adams (Oasis)
Word Up! - Korn (Cameo)
You've Got to Hide Your Love Away - Eddie Vedder (Beatles)

Tell me, what songs are we missing? Because, you know, I haven't spent enough money on iTunes this week. (And by the way, the "Hey Ya" cover is AMAZING.)

* * * * * * * * *

Finally, I have two posts up elsewhere this week, if you’re interested. My final “Potty Ambassador” post is up on my other blog (spoiler alert: I have a potty-trained kid!) and over at BeautyHacks, I discuss bespoke fashion, and try on some of my old bridesmaid dresses for you. (I designed those suckers myself, people! Be nice!)

Have a great weekend!

I saw your question on Twitter, but it just now occurred to me that I love Dolly Parton's cover of "Shine" - originally a Collective Soul song.

"Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" by Dave Mason. I love the original but this version gives me chills. I, ahem, heard it on a Grey's Anatomy episode a couple years ago and promptly downloaded it. It should, of course, be played at top volume.

Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright is one of my favs too! I like it better than Jeff Buckley, though I'm sure people will hate me for that.

And Eva Cassidy's version of Fields of Gold is in my will to be played at my memorial service. Morbid, yes. But that's the song I want people to hear when celebrating my life because I think it's THAT beautiful.

I also really liked Chris Cornell's version of Billie Jean.

But one of my all time favorites is Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's Somewhere over the Rainbow. It makes me cry almost every time I hear it.

Bonnie Prince Billy, "World's Greatest," R Kelly's original song. Girl's Gone Child used it in one of her video blogs a while back. Download the iTunes version, it's way better than the YouTube video.

Also heard that Flasdance sone "What a Feeling" covered by who knows who on Grey's Anatomy last night... was very interesting. Apparently it's by "Hollywood, Mon Amour"

Also love "Bleeding Love" by Boyce Avenue.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

that Leona Lewis cover of Run is a travesty. I have a copy of when Snow Patrol was in my radio stations studio and they recorded an acoustic version. it was HEAVEN. so good. sooo good. so much better than ANYTHING Leona could come up with.

Johnny Cash's cover of Trent Reznor's Hurt was GREAT.

Nirvana's cover of Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World and The Meat Puppets' Lake of Fire were both AMAZING.

hmmm..now i have some cover thinking to do.

You can't say you're breezy. That totally negates the breezy.

I love, love, love Hallelujah... the original and all covers I've heard (although I think I like the Jeff Buckley one best b/c I heard it first). And I cannot believe there is a cover of Baby Got Back... I will need to check this out.

A cover you need to add is "Romeo and Juliet" -- Indigo Girls cover of Dire Straits. Apparently it's also been covered by lots of other people, but I haven't heard them yet. I'll need to check out the Matt Nathanson cover of it.

hmmm, so maybe i do miss out because i'm not on twitter...
this is not a love song -Nouvelle Vague (Public Image Ltd.)

"Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush. Covered by both Placebo and Within Temptation with totaly different sounding results. Placebo keeps the song slow and gives it a longing and almost despairing quality. Within Temptation takes it in the other direction and makes it rocking and defiant.

"Summer Breeze" by Seals & Crofts has that dreamy 70's mellow feel to it. It was covered by Type O Negative who manage to both keep that dreamy feel and make it sound slightly sinister.

I love covers too. A while ago, I ended up at a live show with this amazing singer, her name is Ann Vriend. She is a cross between Tori and Regina Spector. Super quirky. Anyhow, she lives just north of us, but tours all over the world, is part of a group called the Valiant Thieves. They have an album that is solely dedicated to cover songs but in a jazzy way. You can check out their myspace, its http://www.myspace.com/valiantthieves I have their album and all of my kids request it when we are driving, and they don't even realize what they are listening to, its great!!! Tell me what you think.

Apparently my copying skills aren't up to speed. Yeesh.

I also love all the covers that Band From TV does, as well as Micheal Buble's old school hits.

Fun. I like Between the Bars by Metric (it's an Elliott Smith song).

Also, I like Joe Strummer's cover of Redemption Song.

That's all I can think of right now.

Careless Whisper - Seether (George Michael) Awesome cover song!!!!

For the funny, The Gourds doing "Gin and Juice" by Snoop Dog is pretty great, especially when you listen to the words in a country-esque style. Also, pretty damn catchy:

And for those of us who love this stupid song, but are embarrassed to admit it, here is Rivethead doing "Sexy Back" obviously, originally Justin Timberlake, but with a hard rock-type feel.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk0V7n9Q8f0

Oh, and Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" by some guy named Gus. A friend put this on a mix cd for me years ago and it's really slow and moody. Very cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu6x8KuPmTk

I'm just full of them, apparently. Sun Kill Moon did an entire album of Modest Mouse covers that are really interesting. Check out "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes" if you can find it. I tried looking on YouTube but i didn't find that track.

I love covers too! But I tend to lean to acapella groups' versions of songs only because it blows my mind that there are no instruments making these amazing noises. You can google BOCA (Best of College Acapella) and see what groups you like. I like the college groups because they're more likely to do a crazy version of Snow Patrol or Rufus Wainwright than older group. You can purchase some of it on iTunes. My fave group is called All Night Yahtzee.

Oh, I was going to strongly recommend Fields of Gold, so I'm glad someone else loves it as much as I do!

A few more:
"Crazy" Ray LaMontagne covering Gnarls Barkley

"Down by the River" Dave Matthews Band covering Neil Young (there are no 5 hour solos in it - I hate that too!)

Allison Crowe also does an excellent cover of Hallelujah.

"Hurt" Johnny Cash (Nine Inch Nails) It's a great one.

perfect just like mommy said...

Sam Cooke's "Cupid" redone by Colin Meloy from the Decemberists. Love it.

Also, "Just Like Heaven" by the Cure, redone by the Watson Twins.

And Feist's "Mushaboom" redone by Bright Eyes.

And I love a lot of the covers you mentioned as well.

Jason Mraz's cover of A Hard Rain is A'Gonna Fall is AMAZING. (I am also one of those people who thinks Bob is a brilliant lyricist but who has no pipes for the carry through.) Even if you hate Jason Mraz, this cover is incredible. You must get it.

In my life - Bette Midler (the Beatles) is STUNNING, I defy you to listen to it and not cry. It's also my daughter's bedtime song, so just Maybe that's why I find it emotional.

Also, I LOVE the Wil.I.Am version of "I like to Move it". The kids dance around the house and we repeat it life 10 times in a row.

Thanks for such an interesting post!

No where on your list is anything by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - who do ONLY cover songs. Also there are a couple compilation cd's out there called "Punk Goes Pop, Punk goes Pop2, Punk goes 80's and Punk goes Metal". You should definitely check out the Punk Goes 80's. There is a Paula Abdul Cover of Straight Up by a band called Halifax and another band that I can't remember covers Wrapped Around Your Finger by The Police. Both are very good. Some other really notable covers are "Umbrella" (Rhianna) by Mandy Moore, "Wild Horses" (The Rolling Stones) by The Sundays, "I Heard it through the Grapevine" (The Miracles/Glaydis Knight and the Pips/among others) The Kaiser Cheifs, "We Will Become Silhouettes" (The Postal Service) by The Shins, and "Drive" (The Cars) by Deftones.

I know it's impossible to believed I missed anything after your Twitter request but I just came up with one more:
Alien Ant Farm's version of Smooth Criminal

Hmmm... If you like Jimmy Buffett (and the Greatful Dead, for that matter) than Jimmy's cover of "Uncle John's Band" is pretty good. Also, Tori Amos has done a lot of great covers; I particularly like "I Ran (So Far Away)". And if you're in the mood for something *racy*, Far's cover of Ginuwine's "Pony" is awesome.

Hey, thanks for catching that typo, iPhone! I meant Grateful Dead. I'm pretty sure greatful is not a word.

You can't really go worng with Cake. Or Jonathan Coulton. Also, Thrice does an awesome version of "Eleanor Rigby (Beatles)".

"Mrs. Robinson" The Lemonheads (Simon and Garfunkel)

"Where the Streets Have No Name" Pet Shop Boys (U2). I KNOW.

and Dave Matthews' version of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" is good, too. Stays pretty true to the original, doesn't go crazy with the jams. I agree with everything you said about Dave Matthews, and I love him. It's funny because it's true!

You Give Love a Bad Name - Blake Lewis (Bon Jovi)

I can't think of any that haven't been covered already, but I HAD to say, that DMB song is one of my all-time faves. I heard it in concert once before it came out on any cd, and about died. (Everything you said about them--HAHA, love it.)

I usually am not a fan of cover songs, but two bands that always seem to do them right are Metallica and Guns 'n' Roses (I know, 80's flashback, but they're good). For Metallica, anything on Disc 2 of Garage Inc blows me away, and for GnR "Sympathy for the Devil" is amazing, and also "Heartbreak Hotel." I just heard Careless Whisper today and I LOVE IT. And since you mentioned Indigo Girls you can't leave out "Romeo & Juliet," which backs up your point about Dylan songs being better when someone else is singing. :)

Kimmy said...

Chris Mann's cover of Heartless is my favorite version of that song. I just so happen to be listening to it right now on his MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/chrismannmusic) & here's the YouTube video, which is a must see (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyoYjXz9ZTc).

Delurking to say that Susan Tedeschi also did a version of "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" and it's sublime.

Kristabella said...

Half the time I don't remember if a song is a cover. I didn't realize like half of the ones on the list were covers, usually because I never heard the original.

And seriously, Dave Matthews, that is SO TRUE. I love his version of All Along the Watchtower, but I GET IT! YOU ARE JAMMING! NOW STOP!

Ace Enders does a great version of Bittersweet Symphony.

Gin and Juice by the Gourds (country version--it's too funny and actually catchy!)

Long Black Veil is also covered by the Proclaimers (scottish band).

Did you get In Between Days by Ben Folds? I think it was originally done by the Cure.

I'm going to have to come back here when I have more time and go through all the songs you listed. I've been looking for some new music.
