By this, I do not mean that I am challenged by the act of living in a specific location, choosing instead to wander the country like a hobo named Snaggletooth Mary. (Alexa? Is that…is that a real person?) No, what I mean that when shit gets me down, I do my very best not to let it KEEP me down. I drive J crazy with this (in a…hopefully endearing way?), always trying to find the bright side like a damn Disney Princess. I’ve been having a bit of an icky week, and I try here—and in life, really—to focus on the good things. So indulge me, just for a post, in my Disney Princess ways, would you please?
1. My return to my beloved hobby, making useless Venn diagrams out of songs and movie lines. Here's the latest:
2. The Anya Marina cover version of T.I.'s "Whatever You Like," a rap song that I secretly lip-sync to while driving, and by "lip-sync," I mean "yes, there is lip-synching, but also, butt-in-seat dance-bouncing and the miming of the line 'gas up the jet for you tonight,' because, sure, I totally know what that looks like, considering I don't even know how to pump gas in a car." The original is awesome and raunchy, but this gorgeous (yes, really) version--which is slower, stripped-down, guitar-driven, and sung by a sweet-voiced girl--is even better. And...dirtier, somehow.
3. This picture:
4. My new perfect flat brown boots, which I got on CRAZY SALE.
5. The song "I and Love and You" by the Avett Brothers, which Ali brought into my life. (Here's the video, in the event you, you know, don't implicitly trust my music taste:)
6. The fact that I have a husband who asks the right questions.
7. This site. (Its title is NSFW, but the site itself is lovely; full of happy-making pictures and quotes.)
8. This heartbreakingly beautiful picture, which I found on said site. (Which reminds me: Thank you, Veterans.)
9. The fact that I have been petrified to make challah (a type of braided Jewish bread, is, I guess the best way to describe it) since, well, ever, and I'm pleased to say that I? HAVE MASTERED IT. I shall now buy this shirt to wear while baking it each week. Look! It includes glitter:
10. Stovetop popcorn. (It's so much better than microwave! Why was I not informed?!)
Ahh. Feeling better already. So, what's been putting a smile on your face this week? Come on, spill it! It'll make you (and me!) happy. :)

Hm. It's been a bit of a week of unpleasantness, but there is one thing that has been making me smile a bit - my fiance has been scooting up behind me in the middle of the night, squeezing really hard and saying "I just love you sooooo much," and supposedly has no memory of doing it in the morning, which totally doesn't make it any less adorable.
Sorry for your icky week. That 'Challah Back' shirt is awesome. And if you think stovetop popcorn is good, try making it with coconut oil for amazing taste sensation. And it's actually really good for you, so you can feel all virtuous while you're scarfing it by the handful!
Oh, that picture of the soldier hugging her little girl has me in tears.
I love baking challah, and we really love eating homemade challah. My recipe makes 2 medium sized loaves, so I try to have 1 in the freezer. We haven't had store bought in ages.
That shirt is awe. some.
I'm not Jewish but I work out at a almost all-Hasidic women's gym in Lakewood. Think they'll get a kick out of it?!?
Great photo of the kids.
What's making me happy this week: my sinus infection is going away, Glee was back on this week, I got double-walled martini glasses for my birthday in the mail, and I haven't impaled myself after being home sick with my sick kids for two days.
Well, YOU have made me laugh via chat more than once, so there's that.
This post had me smiling the whole way through it. And now I'm humming...
"Always look on the bright side of life."
You're welcome.
(Love you!)
the perfect post for me to read today afer a bit of a tiff with my Hubby this morning and facing a 12 hour work day...
So...what's making me smile:
1.) teaching my tot to say "salut" and "bon appetit"...seriously, it's so cute.
2.) My new brown boots...but I did not get them on crazy sale.
3.) philosophy "holiday spice and everything nice" lipgloss
4.) looking forward to the new moon premiere (I know, that is just sad!)
Mmm great list, great idea. Mine would include:
1. It is Thursday, almost Friday, almost the weekend!
2. The forecast is sunny and 60 on Friday, unheard of for Chicago in November.
3. Peppermint Mocha from Starbucks
4. Thanksgiving is coming up and I'm going home to Austin to see my family and eat Authentic Mexican Food (and um, turkey and stuff).
5. Wonderful fun blogs to read when I'm bored at work (like yours! Challah Back, LOVE IT)
Hope things are looking up very soon!
the sesame street clips popping up all over the internet this week have made me happy. and right now the halved acorn squash roasting in the oven is making me smile.
I need that shirt. That is all. Can I get a challah!
what's making me happy...hrm...that you are coming to visit me and that I am MARIO. haha
party in the manner of the jews!
Challah back? You definitely NEED that t-shirt.
Also, I hereby declare, by the Power of Greyskull (Um? I watched G.I. Joe last night so now I can only think in 80's cartoons), that next week is going to be much better than this one, amen.
Awww, that photo of T and Lo is SO ADORABLE!
I still think we need to make the "Bacon Representing For Kosher Jews Everywhere! CHALLAH!" shirt!
I'm happy it is Thursday and almost the weekend! And that I get to see you ON MONDAY!
Ok, that shirt took me a second until I said it out loud. That's like nerdy humor at its finest.
Hee - I love that shirt! And thanks for the Avett Brothers video. I've been hearing about them everywhere, but never listened until today. I'm totally hooked.
What's making me smile is tickets to see U2 next summer, and my upcoming trip to Hawaii. I've been grinning all day. :)
What boots did you get? I just got my brown flat boots last week and have been rocking them all week long. They make me SO happy.
Just so you know, your Venn Diagrams are always on the list of things that help me cheer up. I'm having a crappy, erm, month? year? and what has been helping me the most is a song by (gasp) Cyndi Lauper called "Fearless."
Also? I'd shank a ho for your challah recipe. That's a standing offer.
Oh, I love Anya Marina's magical musical voice. She was a DJ on my favorite local station here in San Diego. I miss hearing her every day, but it's wonderful that her career is taking off.
I loved your list. And stovetop popcorn IS the best.
Steph
That shirt is cracking my shit up. Being of the non-Jewish variety but having spent many a days working in a Jewish preschool, I take my Challa making skills very seriously. Those kids had to eat a lot of rock hard Challa before I got that shit right.
That picture is absolutely fabulous. Your kids are so adorable. Cracked me up b/c my kids each own those same clothing items, I think they secretly want to be just like T and Lo.
