What I've Been Up To (Prominently Featuring Diabeetus Cat and the Zombie Apocalypse)

1. I just changed jobs. It's within the same company, but still. Now, granted, you may have noticed that I studiously avoid making any other comment about my workplace here other than that I...have a place where I work (and I genuinely love my job), so this will likely have no impact on you whatsoever. (I could be a firefighter, for all you know! A Supreme Court Judge! A high-class escort! A firefighting escort judge!) However, I will say that I've worked in the same division for eight (!!!) years, so the change is a big one for me, but something that I decided was important for my career (as a CSI? Marine Biologist? Real World producer? NO ONE KNOWS.), and I'm excited/nervous, which is, I suppose, par for the course with these types of things. A few nerves are good, right?

2. The fall Jewish holidays, man. I can't catch my breath. We went to my parents for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur -- coming home in between -- and then we're off to my in-laws for the first days of Succot, also known as "that holiday with the outdoor booths" later this week. Then we come back home (huzzah!) for Simchat Torah, also known as "that holiday with all the drinking." We are a festive people when we're not fasting.

3. My birthday is coming up on Sunday, and I turn 30. I love the idea of being 30. I cannot remember the last time I was this excited for a birthday, crow's feet be damned. (Maybe the year I turned 10? When I was all, "double digits, man. I am so sophistica--You WILL be mine this year, American-Girls-doll-named-Samantha"? I think then.)

4. I'm developing the world's largest ladycrush on Emma Stone. After going to see The Town (I KNOW, I'm a glutton for freak-ass scary nun-robber-related punishment) and finding it sold out, we opted instead for Easy A, as it possessed the key quality of "playing at the same time, and not being Devil." She's adorable! That raspy voice! That pretty auburn hair! She is my new Lindsay Lohan (who I used to adore to pieces). (Sorry, Emily; at long last, I've finally given up on our girl.) Call me, Emma! I want to talk about your hair and also eat some pie! You seem fun! And/or as if you'd like to eat some pie!

5. Against my better judgment, I started rereading The Passage (relatedly: Am in a reading funk. What to read next? Help!) and consequently, I have spent more time than I care to admit lately thinking about how I'd handle a zombie apocalypse. Not Helping At All: The Walking Dead previews on AMC during Mad Men. I don't want to give away all of my strategies, but my multi-part plan involves both hiding in my file cabinet and subsequently ACTING like a zombie despite still retaining my human form. I know. I don't know why I haven't been given an MacArthur Fellowship award, either. It's all politics, I'm sure.

6. Getting me through this stressful time is Diabeetus Cat. Oh, Diabeetus Cat, how you make me laugh!

7. I honestly just had to google whether or not Wilford Brimley is still alive. (He is! Good for you, old boy.) I have trouble remembering with that guy.

8. See also: Carol Channing, Brian Dennehy, George Hamilton. AND I KNOW THERE ARE MORE. I just can't even REMEMBER the people whose, er, life status I CANNOT REMEMBER.

Yeah, that Emma Stone is cute. My daughter wants to take some theater classes and I was so close to agreeing to drive her to one on the other side of the valley DURING rush hour simply because of their boast that EMMA STONE! SHE WAS HERE! I'm an idiot.

Have you read One Day yet? It was my favorite book of the summer. For something more serious, Red Hook Road. It has got some underlying Jewish themes you might really like.

I'm reading The Help right now and it's great.

I know you read The Forest of Hands and Teeth, which I railed on pretty insanely on the Twitters, BUT! I read the sequel/companion book/whatever--it's totally a sequel, and I liked it a lot more. So if you're wondering what happened to Crazy, Whiny, Ocean-worshipping Mary, I recommend The Dead-Tossed Waves.

Did you know they cast Emma Stone in the movie for The Help (as the supposed homely, plain girl Skeeter)? Plain and homely, my ass.

Funny thing about what Diane said - I loved the Forest of the Hands and Teeth but thought The Dead Tossed Waves was a painfully bad sequel.

When you said pie, all of could think of was Minny's pie. I don't suppose Emma (Skeeter) will be wanting to eat any of that pie.

I really hope she does a good job with Skeeter, as I am also a fan of Emma Stone.

Congrats on the new job! And happy early birthday!

I had no idea that Wilford Brimley was still alive. Thanks for saving me from having to Google that myself.

I just finished the passage too- definitely scary, but dang baby, you gotta be 800 pages long?? also, prepare yourself for the fact that this is the first of a trilogy (in case you didn't already know)- i was a little bit less than happy when the story didn't exactly get a resolution. and emma stone? yay! i saw easy a on the weekend and immediately walked out thinking i was totally bad ass (as is my habit, to think i personally lived the movie i just saw) and witty. it didn't last long, but it felt goooooood.
ps. love your writing :)

LOVE Emma Stone. She was the best part of The House Bunny. She also had a role in an episode of Louis CK's old show, Lucky Louie. She was their friends' out of control teenage daughter who they took in to try to help and get her back on track. Under their encouragement, she signed up for a class at a community college. They came home to find half of her class in their apartment having a party, along with the professor. Emma's character introduced them to the professor, saying, "He's amazing! He's been all over the world! He just got back from TORONTO!" Her delivery is perfect. It makes me giggle every time I think of it.

I have no idea who Emma Stone is. I am 31 going on 90.

(this is what you have to look forward to in your 30s! not knowing who anyone is)

I'm reading The Glass Castle right now, which everyone has already read, but if you haven't, it is very good.

Also! We are joining the club of People Who Are 30 at nearly the same time! I turn 30 on Friday! I need to stop with the exclamation points! Okay then!

Books I've read recently and liked are "Brains: A zombie Memoir" which is supposed to be the diary of a professor turned zombie.

"Go Mutants" which was weird but is set in the 50's but in an alternate reality where there are mutants and aliens

"The Year of the Flood" & "Oryx and Crake" which were two of a trilogy and I liked them so much that I can't wait until the third is published.

I really want to see Easy A; but I need to find a girl to go with me; I'm guessing my man won't go near that movie.

Hmm, I thought "Forest of Hands & Teeth" was a bit too slow. (My mindset reading zombie novels, "Hurry up and get on with the zombie onslaughts and subsequent re-killing of the zombies!") But now I am going to have to read the second one just to see if it gets any better. I read The Passage, and indeed it was too long, but once I was through the first 100 pages it really moved fast until the last 50ish pages. So that's *only* 150 pages of blah to deal with...not even 1/4 of the book!

As for your zombie apocalypse survival plan: Emma Stone was in Zombieland, I'm sure over pie she could give you some tips.

I want to make out with you hard for posting Diabeetus Cat.

Because, really.

It is almost as rad as The Hoff singing "Hooked on a Feelin'" and I had already listened to it tonight.

And no. I am not saying how many times it was on repeat.

But we shall leave it at the fact that the number is probably higher than the number of cat treats the feline Wilford Brimley horked down tonight.

:)

Congrats on the new position! That's super exciting (slash nervous-making)!

Have you read any of the Tana French books? I enjoyed In the Woods, ADORED The Likeness, and am desperately trying to get through my interim book before cracking open Faithful Place. Which is to say, I love Tana French.

(My husband is reading The Passage right now... So I'm sure we'll be zombie proof in short order.)

Yes, Brian Dennehy confuses me b/c he died in Tommy Boy. Which also starred Chris Farley, who is definitely dead.

I am turning 30 in September, and I too am actually excited about it. I don't know what it is, but it seems like the next part of my life is starting, and there's a lot in the last few years that has caused me to struggle. I am happy to start the next decade.

You are too funny.

Also? I love Emma Stone as well.

PS: Almost as much as Emily Blunt.

1)Happy birthday!

2)It says "lip gloss ho" right at the top of the page. Is that not your official job title?

3)I am with Rhi in the over 30 crowd who does not know this Emma chick. On the other hand, I am also done with Lindsay.

4)I just finished the third book in the Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger. The first book is Soulless and was my favorite. There are no zombies, but there are vampires, werewolves, and ghosts.

You're totally promoting synergy, aren't you?

(LIKE A BOSS.)

I shall herein state for the record that I also think Emma Stone is awesome. And Easy A was one of the best movies I've watched this year.

Book recommendations!

1. Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman
2. Shiver, by Maggie Stiefvater
3. Sunshine, by Robin McKinley
4. I'm currently reading the entire Chronic(what?)les of Narnia series because I never did, and also because I am apparently 12.
5. Hans gave me The Historian to read, so I shall also be reading that, though probably not until next month.

I thought you were scared of the dead nuns! Anyway, happy birthday and congrats on the new job.

I would peg you as a pimp, not an escort.

Emma is adorable and I can't wait to see that movie!

Congrats on the new job and turning 30 - both are awesome!

And seriously, Diabeetus Cat makes me laugh out loud every single time.

I have some bad news for you. Emma's hair is dyed that color! But I suppose you could take it as good news...she has a great colorist AND so that means you could have that beautiful color too!

I saw Emma Stone is supposed to be Skeeter in the movie adaptation of The Help.

Also, I was talking to Ali about the Jewish holidays and I'm like "that's the one with the apples and honey, right?" and "that's the one with the fasting and the chest banging?"

It's like a Friends episode guide to Jewish holidays! Huzzah!
