Exciting news! I'm finally getting my hair cut and colored on Thursday night. This appointment is LONG OVERDUE, and I probably should've warned you about this truly thrilling AND groundbreaking development in all of our lives before just SPRINGING IT ON YOU like that. My apologies. I change up my hair so rarely that whenever I do, I become wrapped up in What I Shall Decide On, and How It Will Look, and oh, god. Now you're just going to suffer along with me, I'm afraid.
I deliberated, and settled on my plan -- Emma Stone red -- (so perfect for fall! Maybe?) when I mentioned the hair appointment to my mom earlier this evening.
Now, my mom is genuinely the kindest person I know, but she also does
not mince words when it comes to my hair. ("
I did not like what
you did last time." -- My mom.) She then told me to make it "brown-gold," because I "don't have the skin tone for that red." And what it came down to, really, was that I should go back to my original hair color. ANYway, at first I scoffed, but then I was like, "huh, brown- gold could work...maybe?"

SO, before I ask you to weigh in (AND I WILL), here's a picture of me/my hair taken three minutes ago. (I had attempted a tousled wave thing at 5:45 this morning, which went exactly as well as you would expect for pre-dawn hair styling, and now it is nearly 15 hours later):
Now, I don't like to talk about this much, because I feel funny bragging, but I'm kind of a photo editing wizard. In order for you to have a true vision of the options here, I've taken the liberty of showing you both potential choices as realistically as I can with my (copious) skills:
Okay, NOW you can weigh in. Auburn-ish? Or Golden-Caramel-Brown-ish? Please advise!

I'm going gold-brown. Or the "right" auburn - I'd totally just ask your stylist. Either way, you'll look gorgeous!
The only reason I would recommend caramel brown is because my hair has turned out purple the last 2 times I've tried to go red. But I'm pretty sure it was due to the complete ignorance of my idiot colorist (me).
So...auburn-ish. It really IS perfect for fall!
Auburn-ish! Just talk to your stylist so they pick the right tones for your skin - it will look amazing!
(Golden-caramel, to me, screams spring-almost summer. Not autumn).
Unless you can get that EXACT red and that EXACT style shown in your wondrous PhotoShop image, I vote golden-caramel-brownish.
Definitely auburn-ish. It's so much better for fall. Maybe try the golden color in spring or summer?
Loving the gold dreadlocks. I think an auburn would look pretty. Maybe not as red as Emma Stone. In any event, I'm sure it will be gorgeous.
Auburn! Auburn! Auburn! That golden-brown is hard to do, hard to maintain and hard to pull off. Auburn? Classic.

Ah, this is a tough one because I have seen auburns go very wrong. On the other hand, I think I could see that on you more than a blonder look. So I'd say if you trust your colorist then tell her to Emma Stone you.

I tried to go blondish - and despite my boyfriend looooving it (I think he has issues) - it looked horrible on me. So if you liked going red before, go for it. But I find auburn way harder to keep up than carmel blonde.
ok have to delurk for this one. Your hair 'body' seems similar to mine. As far as color - both will work with your skin tone (yay!) however, if you want your hair to appear thicker/fuller, go with the caramel/gold/brown with many tones. OH I HAVE IT! auburn with brownish/golden highlights - best of both worlds.

OK, I noticed in your pic you're rocking an awesome jewel-toned shirt. If you can pull off the jewel tones, you can pull off the auburn. Trust a brunette who has a (naturally) red-headed sister!

The golden brown is SO Tami Taylor. I'm thinking about doing it to my head. Along with some hoop earrings and aviators, of course.

About this time last year I went from my usual blonde to auburn and I LOVED it. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED! (Sorry—I didn't mean to get so shouty!)
However, the maintenance on red is a lot. I was in that salon chair every three weeks to keep my locks that luscious red and it was a time suck (never mind what it did to my wallet). I was able to extend it with some of those great new at-home color kits, but dude, the red is a lot of work.
I am sure either will look fab on you- so... what did you choose? Update!
